I gues that was my question, I stupidly installed their software per their instructions, but it sounds like maybe it isn't needed, and the displays preference pane will work by itself. Powerdesk is the matrox display driver that they yell you to install.

Hi there

im totally new to VDMX and have moved over from Resolume (any cheers?)
Im just about getting the hang of the interface which seems pretty amazingly powerful and im trying to do something i imagine is quite straight forward

i want to Control Video scrub or opacity with an Audio Input.
Do you have a link to a tutorial or can someone explain for me?
Can I reherse with iTunes and select that as the input? i.e. not have aphysical cable and external source come into my line in?

I have a second Q,
I need to output at 3072 x 768
Im making flash files for this but my playback is staggered and not smooth. Is there something I can tweak or a workaround or a little cheat to get smoother playback of very simple flash animations? im going to need to overlay subtitles onto them as well. But im not using big video files at all. Mostly they are short uber-simple flash loops. Im on a 2ghz macbookpro intel (3 yrs old)

thanks so much

Never heard about powerdesk, but you can use easilly your dualhead in VDMX (or any other software). You probably note that your dualhead is configured at a resolution equivalent to 2 screen side by side and seen as just one second screen. Now if you have for exemples 2 layers in your project and place one to the right, the other to the left?

You might look into a firewire 800 SSD drive. They are pricey, but that's the best performance you can get. G-Tech makes one.

I'm curious to hear everyone's advice on how best to use an SSD card. I'm currently keeping VDMX and all my media files on it and it seems pretty fast... I formatted the card as HFS+. I'm not sure if keeping VDMX on the card is making any difference, and I'm considering moving it back to applications.

So, I have a couple of Dualhead2Go's, and they are working, but I am seriously distressed by how bad the software that Matrox provides for OSX is, and I get nervous every time I open it. It looks and behaves like something that was cranked out by a Windows programmer who spent an hour thumbing through a Mac Programming for Dummies book. Is there an alternative to using the Matrox Powerdesk software, or am I stuck with it if I want to use the Dualhead2Go? It seems like it's in a constant battle with the built in display system preference page, and it's a confusing blob of preferences and dialogs.

Hey Tweaking,

We've already got some ideas on how to improve this aspect of the workflow, but off the top of my head here are a few reasons why we wouldn't go with your suggested implementation-

1. Mousing over something and then scrolling requires a certain level of mousing precision to work elegantly. This isn't usually a big deal when you've got a large table view, but on a small UI like a pop-up menu a slight slip of the hand and you are off the menu at which point you have to carefully reposition the pointer in order to resume scrolling.

2. Scrolling through a list of items when the contents of the list is not visible is still extremely awkward.

3. We typically try to make standard UI items behave the same across the application. Scrolling through pop-up menus in this manner would be flat out inappropriate for other situations in VDMX, especially menus that have sub-menus.

I think this would be a good time for me to note that it is usually most useful for us to find out what you find limiting or confusing rather than ideas for specific implementations*. This makes it possible for us to come up with solutions that make sense within VDMX, while also taking into account how other people approach using the software. What makes sense for you might not work for someone else, even when you may be trying to accomplish the same thing.

For example, the task you are trying to accomplish here is finding the right composition mode to use for a layer, which can sometimes be time consuming because it often involves a little "guess and check". I'm with you on that, but there are better ways of going about it than using the scroll wheel.

- David @ VV

* Getting feedback in this manner also saves us the trouble of having to write up responses like this that shoot people down.. probably the second most annoying kind of post we have to make here because it is almost impossible to not sound mean when doing so, which requires an extra round of editing

I got a 24 gig Wintec SSD (It's sold as 'Aluratek 24 GB Filemate Solid State Drive ExpressCard' ) yesterday and I'm currently testing it out. I have my media and the VDMX application on it but my system is still on my internal drive. So far it seems faster than playing off a firewire drive. Clips trigger very quickly. and overall the program seems more responsive.

I dont think this matters much as long as you are not talking about ram-loading the whole clip. With shorter clips it may be possible to ram-load or pre-load more often for near instant triggering, but if you are not doing that, I dont think it makes much of a difference at first glance.

I have a suggestion, rather than asking, why not do an experiment yourself and let us know?

If I'm understanding your question correctly, you could sync the published button/boolean to a key by right cllcking and starting 'key detect' in VDMX. Publishing a keyboard setup directly from within QC is not possible, afaik.

Hope that makes sense.

BTW, openEMU played live by the audience, mixed with visuals and effects = great party!
