AV Sequencing using VDMX, Ableton Live and a Monome 40h

Postby momo_the_monster » Tue Apr 10, 2007 11:15 pm

I'm working on a setup for sequencing audio/video clips in a live performance setting, this is what I've gotten so far, using quite a combination of technologies.

hi momo-

wicked, i'm looking forward to seeing what happens when more people start experimenting more with 3rd-party sequencing software and various video apps. thanks for pushing the envelope and showing people how to do the same.

...any idea when we can look forward to a quartz composer/vdmx tutorial? ;-)

I've got a real simple qc/vdmx tutorial showing how to connect a QC patch to VDMX's BPM that I'll probably record this week, time willing :)

Was there something specific you've had some questions about, that could use coverage?

excellent- i'm sure there's loads of people who would love a decent intro- i'm sure you're aware how little info there is for people just looking to get started. there's a sparse doc or two over at apple, but not much beyond that. i know there's precious little in the way of putting together core image kernels, much less using them in qc- which is a shame, because there's an awful lot that you can do with a simple kernel; especially when you start to get into quartz composer-based fx...

on that note- if you think of anything that we could add to the vdmx/quartz composer connection, please let us know.

hi folks and mr ray.

thanks for the tutorial, will check it out when there's a spare moment.
-just a small thing for now. i would love (all in caps) a standard, static text input composer patch, that i can then animate using VDMX controllers. i use the beat text simple .qtz file a bit, but haven't found out how to make it static.

any ideas?

hi zeppo-

you're pretty close to how we're adding text file triggering. depending on when we make the next public beta available, it'll either be in the next beta, or the one after that. wait and see...

as if i ever had patience ;). looking very much forward to that mrRay. imho that's a vital addition to VDMX - even in a somewhat buggy state it would be very much appreciated.

- have a funkadelic evening

We are using 2 laptops ableton and (now we think) VDMX

Postby quickcutboy » Thu Apr 12, 2007 10:19 pm

Hey everyone,
i can't tell you how excited we are to be joining this community o f VDMX users.
We use a macbook pro and g4 powerbook, edirol V4 mixer, m audio trigger finger and modul8 and ableton live for performance.
After playing with VDMX we are ready to convert.
MOMO, thanks for the explanation on Kungfu. We actually met you in SF at the Apple store demo you were giving a month back for NuVJ.
We would like to create sequences to trigger, live midi to VDMX.
We remix video and audio and preproduce some tracks, do live sampling with others,
but are really looking to have warp control and beat synced performances.
Does anyone have any suggestions for us?

Again, we are puppies here and have much too learn about the full capabilities, but I'd like to get the ball rolling. We plan to use VDMX for our monthly next week at the Transfer here in SF.
Thanks for any and all suggestions about midi triggering and sequencing with these two great pieces of software.

hi philipb-

as far as live sampling goes, multi-channel live input is in the works, and will probably appear in the next beta (we don't speculate as to release dates, so please don't ask us when that will be). vdmx has a rudimentary system for creating warp points in your media- open the media inspector palette window, then select a clip in the media bin by holding down shift while clicking on it; the warp points tab should appear once you have a clip selected. this is something we've been meaning to document, but haven't gotten around to doing so yet, so if you've any questions or run into any problems while tinkering around, just drop us a line here and we'll do our best to help you get things sorted out.
