Introduce a sky scene behind a jungle scene

I am working on a theatre production and have been asked to project an animated sky that has a second layer which is a jungle scene to appear superimposed over the sky

The two ways I can think this could be done is to either

1. Create two separate layers, one for the jungle and one for the sky. Playback the sky and the create a PNG movie with a transparent background in the jungle video in the areas where the sky would appear and fade that in over the top of the sky.

or

2. Create two separate layers, one for the jungle and one for the sky. Playback the sky and then fade into a video of the jungle scene that also has the exact same sky footage already superimposed into the jungle scene with both videos playing back at the same time.

I am probably going for option 2 at this stage, but can someone tell me how I can make sure both the sky video and the jungle with sky videos can be set to playback at the exact same time?

Each layer has a data-source that publishes the current movie time which can be used to slave the play head of another movie.

The movie time is available as a normalized (0 to 1) or in seconds depending on whether you want the slaved layer to be stretched / compressed to the duration of the master, but if your clips are the same length it works out the same.

Also I'd recommend pausing the slave layers (or setting the rate to 0) so that the playback isn't fighting against it.
