Glitch File Reader

Postby secretkillerofnames » Wed Nov 04, 2009 7:01 am

Hiya,

was just playing around with QC and realised I have no idea how to set a file path in the Glitch File Reader plugin.

Either that or something isn't working.

I've tried adding something like /Applications/[filename].[ext] in the file path parameter...

any tips on using this plugin?

hi,

like in every file path, the easiest way to double click on the small circle near to file path and it's opens a small frame. From the finder window you can drop any file there, and hit the enter.

Indeed. That works quite well. Its a little known 'secret' in QC. If you have issues with the plugin let me know. Some of the Glitch stuff needs to be updated for 10.6 (the FBO ones in particular since 10.6 / QC 4.0 change how some things are handled). I'll try and get to them soon, but ive been swamped with other projects, so little time for freebie projects as of late :(

Thanks Monkeypresso - that double click works a charm.

But there doesn't seem to be any output. I'm connecting the image output of the plugin to Billboard image input - that should work shouldn't it?

I don't have 10.6 installed yet - waiting for a free week.

Hey Vade, nice work on the plugins

I just got the Rutt/Etra 2.0, and I'm getting strange output from VDMX.

I copied the plugin and installed the .qtz files for VDMX, but when I apply the effect, I just get a single line that jumps around the screen as output. I thought it was the rotation, but none of the parameters have much effect.

I'm on Snow Leopard 10.6.2, running VDMX b7.4.6

The blurs work great, so I'm not really sure where I went wrong.

Glitch freezes VDMX when deleting in layerwindow

Postby Leavingsunday » Mon Nov 23, 2009 11:04 am

Hi Vade,

thanks for the inspiring plugins, it made me move towards Quartz Composer. I'm currently experiencing some problems with the Quartzcomposerfx I made with the glitch plugins. When I try to delete the plugin from the layerwindow in vdmx, it freezes the application. This sometimes happens when switching to a different FX-Chain as well.
I put the fx online for download: http://www.klaasverpoest.com/ask/Misc/QCfx.zip

I'm currently running OS10.5.8, Quartz3.1.4 and VDMXb7.4.6
It would be greatly appreciated if you could find some time to look into this.

Odd. What machine / hardware are you on? Are you sure you dont have an older version of the RE installed in another location? That sounds like a lighting macro bug that I fixed in 2.0. Lighting accidentally rendered in an internal pass that did not need it, messing up the calculated vertices which made it go 'line like'.

In 2.0 this is fixed. Can you double check that 2.0 is installed and no other older version is?

--Edit for clarity.--

Ah, I see you are using the 'texture glitch' effect. One thing you should know which is stated in the readme is that this part of how this plugin creates its effect is by purposefully creating mis-matches in texture format representations, drawing textures in ways they were not meant to be. Different model graphics cards (ATI, NVidia and Intel Integrated, as well as different revisions within those models, ie, NV 9400, 9600, 8600m, etc) have different combinations that work.

I attempted at first to find all the possible working combinations but it limited the functionality of the plugin. I can't reasonably find all working combinations (and in fact asked users to tell me, but folks simply *do not read my readmes even if I offer to suck their dick if they do so*, so that goes out the window. Which means that I left the options completely un-filtered.

The moral of this story is, on many systems (even my own), some of the options in the FBO Texture Glitch *WILL REALLY REALLY FUCK YOUR SYSTEM UP*. So test before a show, and filter out the ones you do not want.

Now, question: Do all of the texture options not work, or only some of them? If some of them, making your own 'random' in lieu of mine is probably the way to go. In fact, I should probably just remove the random button as a safety precaution.

Hope this was educational. Some of these glitch plugins really do mess the GPU up and cause legitimate 'glitches' if not tamed. Be warned. Now I should say after that warning, once you know what works, it is pretty much rock solid with 'safe' inputs.

The only real bug reports I get is the FBO Texture Glitch since it is messing with existing proper image data (your input image) and trying to draw it as other types. This confuses the hell out of some drivers/hardware. Ive never had any issues or bug reports with any plugins other than that one, but its solely due its nature. If you stick to input options that you find work, you should never have an issue.

Thx for the quick response.
I seperated the different texture options and came to a stable set of textures that work without a hastle. These are the settings that didn't work for my setup.

FBO test on PowerMac G5 with NVIDIA GeForce 6600 (not intel)
Not working FBO texture options :
- all GL_Intensity settings
- R3_G3_B2
- RGBA 2
- RGBA 4
- RGBA 5_A1

FBO test on MacBookPro with ATI Radeon X1600 (intel)
Not working FBO texture options :
- all GL_Intensity settings
- R3_G3_B2

(both machines are running OS10.5.8, Quartz3.1.4 and VDMXb7.4.6)

Thanks for the feedback. I did actually remove the intensity options on the newer builds since they dont work on any system ever (only RGB based ones). I think I did that on what is released now, so you may not have the latest public build. You should also know that if you update to 10.6 the drivers are newer and more finicky, on that x1600 at least the new driver is a little more picky about those texture inputs for my machine.

Glad it seems to be working for you now that you've hit on a stable set. Also stay tuned, I have a slightly updated Glitch plugins coming out soon for 10.6 compatibility, but it has some bug fixes and maybe some new functionality.

Film Effects 1.0 released

Postby vade » Tue Dec 15, 2009 4:50 pm

Just a quick note. Ive released 1.0 of my Film Effects for Quartz Composer 3.0 and 4.0 (Mac 10.5 and 10.6 supported). Should have no issues in VDMX for effects. These are kind of straight forward but can be fun to use to make new looks.

Enjoy.

hey thanks man...these are cool! I had been creating something similar but doing it in a very backwards way

what I am really striving for is a film distorion effect...like bad tv you know and also something that is similar to the edge softness tool in magic bullet....I have rough draft versions of both of these but they still need some perfecting...anyways thanks

... look at my glitch effects. I have a analog tv distortion in there already.
