v002 Plugins thread (update: Glitch plugins for 10.6)

Postby vade » Thu Sep 18, 2008 4:52 pm

Hi.

Ive updated my screen grab and blur plugins and QC patches for VDMX to work with Public Beta 7.0.

I also hope to be able to release some fun new glitchy plugins soon. Stay tuned!

See http://002.vade.info/ for the downloads to the plugins.

Check the readmes. If you already have the capture plugin, that hasnt changed, just the QC patch for VDMX. If you have the blurs, please update BOTH the QC plugins AND the QC patches for VDMX. The new blurs are updated to remove some artifact-ing / dithering that some folks may have noticed.

I also plan to use this thread to announce new plugins as I release them, so I dont pollute the vidvox forums too much :)

Thanks,

- vade

Beta Glitch plugins released...

Postby vade » Tue Oct 14, 2008 1:54 am

hello fellow visualists.

ive put out some new betas of my glitch plugins. I have not taken the time to create working VDMX compliant Quartz Composer patches, but those are quite trivial to make, so I leave them as an "exercise to the reader."

Right now, you can download and play with:

v002 Analog Glitch - basically this is a variation of the Bad TV effect, except 200-300% faster. You should see very very fast framerates when using this plugin, with some slight variations on the theme.

v002 525 adds 'out of raster' data to your video signal, to add genuine analog video feel to your distortion effects. Used with great effect with the above analog glitch plugins.

v002 FBO Glitch generates real graphics cards glitches in a somewhat repeatable way. This plugin.. frankly, i am almost pained to release because it is so fucking cool. Just play with it. If you liked fucked up glitches, this is a gift for you, from me.

You can thank me later.

Check them out, and let me know how they work for you, id love some feedback.

many thanks for your plugins vade, fantastic stuff :)

i have noticed a thing which i find kinda strange though, sometimes i drive the wet/dry-parameter of fx with audioanalysis, when i applied the blur to a patch like that i got a flickering black screen..

seems that when an effect before the blur in the chain has an wet/dry-ratio lower than 50 the blur outputs blackness if the bluramount is >0.. i tried the normal gaussian blur in the same way and it does operate correctly in the same situation..

any ideas?

edit:

same thing with the motion blur, video here: http://senduit.com/81dedc

That is very weird. What graphics card/machine are you on? Ive tested the plugin with alpha. Does this happen on the non GL blending modes by any chance? Ill see if I can re-create it on my end. Odd...

Well, im able to re-create, however, it only happens in GL Over blend mode, not add. No idea what is going on there, as I handle alpha properly (at least, as far as I can tell, all tests have indicated it works). I wonder if this is a QC plugin/OpenGL compositing bug? Ill have to test some more. Very strange.

i wonder if this is at all related to what i've been seeing in VDMX proper. When using GL add or over blending mode and crossfading between two clips via two channel mixer... as i apporach the 50/50 mix position the image always dips to black. The only way i've been able to mitigate this is by editing the fade curves so that the center points are around one grid mark lower than either end of the curve. Even then it doesn't exactly work as it should... Going back to using non GL blend modes also negates this issue.

Rutt Etra plugin released

Postby vade » Fri Oct 31, 2008 4:48 pm

Hello.

Im really happy to release the first public version of our Rutt Etra emulator for Quartz Composer.

Ive worked with Bill Etra for some time now trying to get this to be as faithful as we can to the original. Bill has been amazingly helpful in all facets of the plugins development, and general advice on realtime video systems.

Its on that note that I bring some sad news, Bill is and has been very ill for some time, and currently lives on disability with very little income and very high medical expenses.

its for this reason ive set up a paypall account accepting donations for Bill Etra, to help him afford his medical expenses and to continue working on his lifes joy - performing, experimenting and developing realtime video tools.

If you find the plugin helpful, or if you want to help one of the founders of experimental video art, please please donate. It will make Bill very happy, and me too.

You can find the link, and a little excerpt from Bill on our 002 site.

Rutt Etra donation and download link

Thanks a lot to everyone who has helped

Thanks a lot in advance, and happy halloween

hey vade,

really nice plugin. i had the displacement thing going with a glsl shader but i couldn't make it draw lines like this one does (i guess its possible with the gl line from gl tools but wouldn't look as nice:)).

i am however having all kinds of coordinates issues with it. first it would mix up the rgb to xyz and now its flipping the displacement image relative to the texture image (one of the axes is flipped).

it might have something to do with the fact render in image is sending out an image with a bgra pixel format.

fsk, could you post a sample QTZ? I've been alpha testing vade's plugins for a while now and I'd be glad to add my two cents of troubleshooting if you like. :)

Can't seem to get this to work...when applying the rutt etra as a filter the output simply turns black and none of the controls effect anything...I have tried on both the newest version of VDMX on Leopard and on the previous build for Tiger on my laptop. Is there a simple step I am missing?
