Ive just released new faster blurs with some bug fixes and what not compatible and tested with Quartz Composer 4.0 and VDMX 7.4.0 under Snow Leopard.

http://002.vade.info/?page_id=6

Let me know if they work for you, they're also 10.5 friendly (both PPC and Intel) so users in QC 3.0 (10.5) can also benefit from the bug fixes.

Thanks, ill keep this thread updated when more plugins move to 10.6 compatible.

v002 Rutt Etra 2.0

Postby vade » Thu Sep 24, 2009 9:47 pm

Im really happy to release 2.0 of the Rutt Etra emulator for Quartz Composer.

This version brings massive new features, powerful new rendering back end, support for lots of fun QC stuff, support for QC 4.0 / Mac OS X 10.6 and the latest VDMX. GLSL macro support, Lighting macro support with properly generated normals for lighting (this is really fun to play with). Combine the two for per pixel lighting. Scan line, point, mesh, triangle mesh and image plane rendering modes, and tons of bug fixes mean the image quality is improved and its a touch faster. New resolution controls means you can control x and y vertex count for fun looks (putting them very low with mesh or point rendering can look very cool).

Check out http://002.vade.info/ for info, with tons of sample compositions, including a pre-built qcFX for VDMX which uses the new pipeline.

Its a lot easier to build and use new effects with the 2.0 RE, so I highly suggest folks experiment with it.

Thanks.

Actually yea, very soon. I have working DV output, but my new movie player and the DV output plugin are totally fucked under 10.6 64 bit QC. They work in 10.6 in 32 bit apps, but not 64 bit apps. There are workarounds, but I think I will release them soon, and then add 64 bit support in the future :)

Thanks for the kind words btw, they mean a lot! Im sorry we did not get more of a chance to talk at LPM. Im sure there will be other times!

different functionality?

Postby secretkillerofnames » Mon Oct 05, 2009 6:15 pm

Hi Vade,

awesome job on the Rutt Etra - I just updated it as Ray suggested the older version may have been the cause of some of my crashes. So this new one is smooth as butter but has some slightly different functionality.

I have a few questions, not sure if you can help.

The Element Size doesn't appear to do anything at the moment.
The X and Y resolutions also appear to make minimal change.
Z extrude seems to only push forwards (I gather this is intentional)
No Zoom?

With the previous version I was having fun extruding the image out and then zooming within it - then setting an oscillator to control the zoom movement slightly. I loved this as it implied positioning within an abstract 3D shape and running 2 versions of the same thing created some amazing imagery.
This doesn't appear to be possible with this version unless i'm missing something.

chrs

I love it when I comment and then work something out straight after

So I can see what the element size and resolution x/y options are doing when I select a mesh or point draw mode.

Still interested to know if there is an appropriate "zoom" option somewhere.
I guess position is maybe a better term for it. I've tried the VDMX x/y scaling and that doesn't really do the same job.

Hehe, if you read the readme, I suggest using the 3D Transform macro patch.

Yeah, i see mention that in the Changelog. Feeling totally noob - where do I find that? Is it a VDMX or Quartz Composer thing?

Thats a QC patch. Its a 'macro', so it means it contains all of the other patches. Basically you would need to do a bit of work and make your own qcFX with the Rutt Etra within the 3D Transform, and set up a single zoom param to adjust the x and y scale, and publish the inputs as appropriate. Play around, leaning QC will good, especially because the new RE gives a lot of opportunity to make unique effects out of it.

Ok, might need to have a go at this later but:

i opened "02 - v002 Rutt Etra With v002 Blur.qtz" in QC

found the 3D transformation macro - went in there - spotted the rutt etra and experimented with adding inputs but couldn't see anyway to do anything more

I added the Kineme GL Scaler and it didn't effect the output (testing with iSight) at all

think I need to do some QC tutorials first maybe?

Thanks for the lead Vade.

Yay - I did it! Took about 4 hrs of head scratching but the solution was face slappingly easy.

Translate X,Y&Z - publish their inputs - set some min/ maxes = Eureka!
I took the liberty of setting Z-extend min to -5 so I can invert depth as well.

Thanks for not telling me too much - it has been liberating!

I'm a research student so not loaded but I paypalled you a small donation.

Am i missing something here?
I'm still running Leopard 10.5.8.

Are you using the latest qcFX included in the download? If so, did you also upgrade the plugin and remove and older versions? (ie, replaced the v002 Rutt Etra in ~/Library/Graphics/Quartz Composer Plugin-Ins)
