How to interactive projection map

Postby esb2001 » Tue Mar 13, 2012 1:54 pm

Hey All,

I'm looking for a solution on how to incorporate interactive mapping using people shadows in my project. I have seen it done, for example:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9VAThVe-FY

Let me know if you have any tutorials or sites to check out. I know a digital slr and some processing is most likely involved.

Thanks!

There's a lot of work being done with the Kinect, analysing silhouettes and using that to generate textures / FX etc. http://www.creativeapplications.net/ is a good place to start looking.

Also see: Kyle McDonald's Shadowplay : https://vimeo.com/37090460. "This video demonstrates some shadowplay experiments, built around the idea of using two projectors that are perfectly aligned. The projectors display the inverse images of each other, so that without interference the screen appears white. When an object enters the space, the structure hidden in the projection is revealed in the shadows."

I saw a great shadow work in 2002 at Ars Electronica - very simple but very effective - projectors beamed an image onto a building. A bright light also beamed onto it, effectively killing all the projections - *except* where people stood between the light and the building - creating people shaped silhouettes of video in realtime. People loved it and were very playful with moving distances from the light and each other...

there's some ideas anyway ...
( end / procrastination side-track.... )

lots of work on the web.
There is actually different possibility,
Kinect allowed to get information about people really fast and precisely, but the shadow is really noisy if you want to use in your image. But can be use to build stuff inside
working with IR light. Put some strong blue and red gel on a big theater spot and look with a camera on the shadow on a screen or wall threw a camera. Even better if you can add to your camera some IR filter to get rid of light not emitting in IR (videoprojector for exemple). Can get really good video shadows too. :)

Buy a kinect off of craigslist of under $80, make sure it comes with the power adapter or buy one on amazon for $10. I paid $50 for my kinect + $10 for the adapter. You can look at Synapse Kinect if you want to wait for it to locate your figure and port it through Quartz Composer or MAX MSP http://synapsekinect.tumblr.com/

For more advanced options or to experiment with code like they have in your video, look into Processing and Javascript: http://processing.org/

This was a processing build that used KinectCoreVision to grab TUIO tracking data, and bring it into Processing that rand Memo's MSAFluid script, and then send it out to Syphon for VDMX -- Madmapper, etc. http://youtu.be/LLBzoFoqNy8

It's really cool and I would say if you can code Processing is good piece of cross platform software to look into.

Unfortunately, my old macbook pro is too slow for me to want to add this to a VJ set.

Google some of the terms above to find out more.

This sketch combines all + Syphon, but you will need to install syphon in the processing root library, but this is not really an ideal forum for this discussion. I would look into some alternatives out there to get all of your questions answered.

And once again, it is not my code.

I work with a team. Team use Unity3D and kinect.
