best way to automate a layer opacity fade?

Just wondering what is the best way to automate the layer opacity slider to fade over specific duration?

I would like to set a button to do this.

Add a 'Two Channel Mixer' plugin. Set the left side to be the desired layer and leave the right side as nothing. You can then map the Fade-R button (it automatically switches to Fade-L after it is pressed so you can hit it again to go back to 100% opacity).

The length of this fade can be adjusted by using the inspector - it will also let you customize the curve of the fade as well.
