iPhone Wifi Mobile Camera for VDMX [Solved] Airbeam ->Syphon

Postby Cornelius » Thu Nov 10, 2011 9:25 pm

Think about it... just walking around a venue streaming your iPhone camera to your laptop into vdmx... Is it possible to use an app like Airbeam ( http://appologics.com/airbeam ) and maybe Syphon to make this idea a reality? Or is there already a better way? Airbeam is $3.99 facetime is only $0.99 in the app store, but I am not sure if Facetime will work on a shared network.

What do you think? or better yet... what do you know?

Could use the window input feature in b8 for this if it streams to a web browser or other application running on your computer

So I gave it a try and no go, it would need a quartz patch to either bring it into QC and out via Syphon or directly into VDMX. If someone wants to give it a go and get it right -- I'll buy lunch :)

What about this http://itunes.apple.com/ca/artist/atom8/id344937544.

And again capture from the web browser using the vidin feature. Im sure it would be possible with any application that streams to a browser.

Here is what the App Developer said back to me in an Email. It is one solution, however, it does not offer a streamline performance solution. Web-browsing is a better start, but another option is out there. Just haven't figured it out yet.

Hi Cornelius,

thanks a lot for purchasing AirBeam and the proposal, which sounds very interesting. As a short term work around i know some people are using AirBeam together with screen capture tools to get the video into other apps like wirecast. There are some screen capture plugin for quartz composer, for example: http://v002.info/?page_id=4 (which doesn't work with MacOS Lion). I think also Syphon has a screen capture server app (needs to be compiled from sources) which might be used to get AirBeams video into composer.
On the long term we'll check if we could create an AirBeam plugin for composer or integrate a Syphon server.

Regards,
Heiko

Wow would be great if the developer integrated Syphon support. Would make the app a must buy.

i tried with http://bambuser.com (free, similar to airbeam)
it's consistently 17s behind, and less than 1fps.
interesting though. NOT:

facetime is 1/5s latency and at least 15fps, and better than SD res, in VDMX!
so why not use that?? don't know if facetime streams directly then. just setup window capture directly in VDMX

The developer wrote back again.

Hi Cornelius,

i see. Viewing in a web browser isn't possible today and never will be with the same frame rate as our native codec and app. So the best solution is probably the custom QC patch. We checked already and it seems doable without too much hassle. Give us some time, could be available beginning of next year.

Heiko

The Mobiola Web Camera app on my ipad/iphone seems to have a barely usable framerate at medium resolution settings (which is still pretty low and pretty slow, but at least good enough to play around with a little).

My problem is my Logitech C910 HD webcam - which I can't seem to change the resolution on and the window input doesn't capture properly from the logitech software.

Updated:
So I have been using the basic airbeam app to just display live video from a venue, to laptop, and then onto my projector. It works great and seems too look the best when two iphones are used simultaneously, I'd take a picture of it, but my phone is in use while it is happening. I am looking forward to the QT integration just as all of you are -- on a side note, I am also looking into the means of integrating live eye-fi card footage and photos onto the big screen, this might be a simpler alternative for the time being.

It is official you can easily stream live video from your iPhone into VDMX (Syphon) Heiko at AirBeam sent me a beta (Lion only at the moment) which takes the live feed and sends the video through the Syphon pipeline. Keep yourselves posted.

Heiko said,

We plan to have two final versions in the AppStore: A paid full version with camera sharing capabilities requiring 10.7 and a free viewer app only which could also run on 10.6. Both would include of course a Syphon server.

Il throw in another vouch for AirBeam. I've been using it with two iPhones and desktop views. There is a bit of a delay, but its pretty acceptable, especially after you wet it with effects. The developer seems bright and helpful, and actually cares about making his product the best iOS live camera system.

And that prompts to buy his product of very high quality. If only there was a version for Android... cuz Sony Xperia S LT26i thus becomes unwanted. Or... I wasn`t able to find this version?

It is official, Airbeam has been released with Syphon for both Lion and Snow Leopard.

Here is the email I just received:

Hi Cornelius,

just wanted to let you know that both Apps our now out on the store. It took a bit longer than expected due to some extra rounds with Apple's review team, but now it's out. AirBeam Pro for OSX Lion with Mac camera sharing capabilities and the update to our AirBeam viewer app for OSX 10.6 and later. Both Apps include the Syphon server, which is activated as soon you open a monitor window.

Regards,
Heiko

Get the app for your phone and the desktop client and Syphon is available. :)
