Audio analyzer & OSC

Postby julienbayle » Sat Jul 21, 2012 11:33 am

Hi there,
I'd love to use & test VDMX5, combined with Max6
Especially, I like the way the audio analyzer works and the Memo Atken example is very nice both technically (vertex program shader!) & artistically (the choice of autechre is unbeatable!)

My question: would I be able to use only the audio analyzer module, analyzing audio coming from soundflower for instance, then to grab the values to tweak my jitter's visuals via OSC ??

Any leads & experiences would be appreciate

best,
julien

I think you'd be better off building your own analysis in Max especially since it so much more powerful and flexible.

Check out these externals for example:

There are many more psychoacoustic sound analysis methods. I recommend you look into transient analysis, it's very powerful. The analysis in VDMX really is quite basic.

Normal envelope detection has a serious flaw: it's not level independent so in silent part of music it might not detect hits, transient detection however always notices hits and also reacts proportionally to the amount of punch so even with very densely compressed music it still reacts instead of producing something quite constant.

hi Veqtor,
thanks a lot for your feedback.
you won't believe me but I was especially digging Emmanuel Jourdan's zsa stuff right now.
I played a bit yesterday.. now digging.
your answer encourage me to dig these further..

I need to analyze peaks, but indeed, also distribution of frequencies etc.
Just hope to be able to design something fast which wouldn't kill my cpu perf on stage.

Hey-

If you set up a Control Surface plugin as a go-between you can send out the Audio Analysis (as well as any other data-source) out via OSC & MIDI.

Check out this video tutorial:

- David @ VV

ps. Adding direct OSC / MIDI output from individual data-source generators is on the to-do list as it would obviously be a huge time saver for people doing this setup.
